Two cranberries ready for picking
C is for Cranberries
Last October my husband visited a cranberry farm in Bala, Ontario, a place I have been to before and will very likely visit at least one more time because we missed seeing the machines that harvest the berries. Well, I've seen it in past years but now I want to photograph the operation.
A field of cranberries
The fields will probably be flooded and the cranberries picked by machine. But I learned this year that cranberries can also be dry harvested. I've never witnessed that.
Cranberry sausage
Doesn't this sausage look yummy? It's topped with homemade cranberry relish.
Honey, cranberry jams and wine
2-letter Scrabble word
Bonus C word: I kid you not that Ch is valid in Scrabble...but nowhere else, it appears! I'm not making this up. (But the Scrabble Dictionary might be.) Look for it in the 5th edition of the Official Scrabble Dictionary and see for yourself.

I was at the Bala cranberry festival once. It was a great weekend for me and wife.
yes the sausage with the cranberry relish looks yummy
Cranberries are a luxury fruit in South Africa. I buy them dried and use them in stuffings for myself, being a vegetarian. Is the CH relevant to the word cranberry? Just wondered! Thanks for an interesting post. I look forward to when you photograph the dry cranberry harvest. Thanks for an interesting post. Jo
mmm
been there also, and thoroughly enjoyed it. We also missed the harvest. Love the wine that they sold, very tasty.
I love dried cranberries with pomegranate juice. Fantastic. I greet! :)
Cranberries are such a delight to eat and I am surprised that they are not used in more recipes year-round, rather than mostly at Thanksgiving in the U.S. I use dried cranberries year round. And the fresh ones from Wisconsin that I buy when available are wonderful.
yum to cranberries! didn't know about dry harvest either!
As a lover of all things cranberry I would love to see the cranberry harvest and yes, the cranberry sausage sandwich looks delicious!
I quite like cranberries...
I love cranberries, that would be a great place to visit.
My parents made it out to Bala once for the festival. I rather like the combination of cranberries and white chocolate.
I like cranberry juice but would choose other berries over the cranberry itself. But the sandwich would definitely change my mind about that.
Love cranberries, but only seen them in fields once or twice. Interesting photos.
Yummy berries and also beautiful field image! I too wonder how the harvesting machine work on the berry field... hope it must be interesting to watch.
I wonder what CH means? I visited a cranberry farm earlier this year and then was on a cranberry recipe craze through the holidays.
Delicious choice fot this weeks letter ;-) You create an appetite in me ;-)
Have a nice abc-day / - week

that looks so good on the sausage. i love those sausage and put mine in a bun, and dip the end in maple syrup. daddy taught me that trick because he alwasy wrapped his in a slice of white bread and dipped it in cane syrup
Why of course it is a word...it is part of ch-ching! I was thinking of the ch-ching of a cash register, but looked it up and too much to read. Or give examples.
I hope you do get to photograph the cranberries being harvested...
I meant i looked up ch-ching....not just ch.
Yes the sausage made my mouth water.
My ABC WEDNESDAY
I love cranberry sauce on lots of things like tuna salad sandwiches!
Lots of cranberry fields in the Fraser Valley of British Columbia - I am staggered by the validity of the scrabble word....
I do hope you get to take pictures of the cranberry harvest and then post them here.I have never seen this done.
Making me hungry!
There's a lovely little shop in Fort Langley (near Vancouver) that sells freshly made cranberry products. I go usually in early fall to get something new each year to use for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Love the look of that cranberry sausage! Looks yummy!

thank for your story, an impression of being with you! I like the picture of the landscape, it reminds me home :)
As a scrabble player I really appreciate the last shot :) Very interesting about cranberries, I never knew that. Love your photos. The macro shot is impressive.
This is great to see, and very pretty. Cranberries are grown in southwestern Washington state but I'm not sure if I've seen the fields.
ch - eese and crackers!
Love all the tasty shots today
Cranberries are nice but I'll take dark cherries any day of the week! I've seen photos or video of cranberries being harvested in flooded fields ... looks interesting and perhaps a little difficult.
I love when cranberries are in season and try to stock pile some bags in the freezer. That "ch" is curious - I may have to use it if my granddaughter is beating me!
Wow! gorgeous cranberry shot and then a sausage sandwich topped with cranberry relish ~ delightful post for C ~
Wishing you the best in each day. ~ ^_^
I remember visiting a cranberry bog somewhere up around New Brunswick.
Cranberry Aussage and wine is a first for me. I would love to try them both. A clever post today.
Yum...cranberry sausage! Looks like a fun outing to see the cranberry fields or how they are harvested...
I love anything cranberry and this place would be on the top of my list!...:)JP
I never considered they were dry harvested....not that I know much about cranberries! lol
I do love cranberries, especially as a relish. good stuff for the body too.
I miss my Bala! I loved the winery!
I love cranberries and my wife basically worships them. I would love to see a real cranberry bog at least once.
Ch a word!! I learn something new every day. I wonder if it is for WWF?
Those cranberries are gorgeous! Boy, does that color POP!
=)
I like cranberry juice and berries with yogurt. The cranberry sausage is mouth-watering.
Yoko
Nothing like ripe fruits straight from tree.
I hope you'll get back for cranberry harvest. That would be neat to see!
I love cranberries, but have not been fortunate enough to visit a field of them. I didn't know they could be dry harvested, so I learned something new too. Happy ABC Wedneday! #36
That cranberry sausage is makingme feel so hungry :)
I've never seen cranberries growing or being harvested. Hope you get some good photos to share with the rest of us.
I do love all things cranberry! xx
And sooo healthy too EG!
Calling by for ABC Wednesday, i like cranberries, particularly tasty in cheese.
Ha, I wonder if that word works with Words With Friends (I am sort of addicted to that game on line, especially since I can't find anybody to play Scrabble with these days).
I did NOT know cranberries could be dry harvested -- we have watched the 'wet' harvest operation on the Oregon Coast near Bandon -- it's a big crop there, though all you ever hear about is ones from 'up East'. And your sausage is making me hungry!!!
I love cranberries! They are great for me with having diabetes.
I love cranberry juice, jam, fruit, and whatever that stuff they serve at Thanksgiving.
ROG, ABCW
I love cranberries in sauce, dried, juiced, and fresh for making muffins. We have a section of town called Cranberry Lake. The small shallow lake was prime growing territory until everything built up around it. - Margy
My good friend lives next to a cranberry bog in Massachusetts and I visit all the time, but I have still never seen a cranberry harvest. The things we take for granted . . .
