Colourful Irrigation/Rural Thursday

Irrigation rig, Holland Marsh

I have been frequenting marshes lately, trying to get good photos of shore birds such as various sandpipers that are beginning (ALREADY!) to migrate south from the Arctic.

The Holland Marsh, which borders on the western side of East Gwillimbury, is only partly marsh now, much of it having been drained a century ago to grow vegetables for the Greater Toronto Area. AND - believe it or not - the former marsh does need to be irrigated during dry spells.

Very nice shot Camera Girl. It looks like an apparatus for watering crops.

Lovely Ontario sunset. I miss the wide vistas and openness of the landscape. Poland is so small compared to Canada and even Ontario that everything is close together.

Somewhat alarming that the birds are beginning to migrate already. Wonder what that means for fall and winter?

Beautiful shot -- thank you for sharing at RT this week. xo

I love watching these big units that look like giant bugs crawling over the landscape dispensing the much needed water.

Love the way you composed this. We've got these watering thingys, also, although we've had a lot of rain lately. But sometimes, we don't get much rain. Then, they are put to good use!

Love the rig so stark against that lush sky! I can't believe some migration has started, is summer really partly over?

What glorious color! I can just sit and watch the changing sky and not be bored at all.

This is a beautiful sky -- and I like the silhouette of the irrigation equipment in the foreground.

I took a trip to west Texas where I saw these rigs. From a distance they looked like giant hair combs propped up on the land.

Great photo.
