My husband and I were walking along a Hydro Marsh trail when - imagine our surprise! - we came upon these amazing sculptures carved out of recycled hydro (utility) poles.This is just a sampling of the sculptures there.

Sculpted by Dorsey James who resides in Pickering, these deities, wizards, magical creatures...were installed in 2001 and renewed in 2011.

It takes foresight and planning to be able to create these wonderful sculptures because the tall narrow shapes must be a challenge. There are wood carvers here in our area who create marvelous objects, figures from trees after they have been cut down. I've watched them demonstrate at the state fair in August every year, and they are very adept with their huge saws and other tools.
these are amazing, he is really talented, the detail is incredible. i like Thor and the owl, beautiful work and a wonderful idea to recycle those poles

These sculptures are wonderful. What a treat to come across them on your walk. I love that they are recycled. They remind me of the postcard I posted recently about Galveston and some of the oak trees that died from hurricane Ike being sculpted. Smart folks!

I loved these sculptures so much, I wanted to know more about the artist, and googled his name. There were several interesting sites. He went to York University and continues to teach high school. He sure is talented! I really love the sculptures. isn't it great when you're out for a walk and discover something totally new?
