Silly Goose/Our World

Clever or silly?

When I first saw this Canada goose sitting on this nest, I was sure she was a silly goose because...

Goose in tree

how did she think she was going to get her goslings to water? After all, baby ducks don't fly.

I happened to go back the next day, and it turns out this wasn't a nest after all. It was merely a resting place out of reach of possible predators. In fact, she could very well be a he.

So who was sillier: the goose or me?

That's cute. They usually nest on the ground.

Funny! I wonder where the saying "Silly Goose" comes from. Maybe just such a picture.

What a great perch! Not only safe from predators - but makes a nice place to pose for a photo, too. :)

Great photo. Not sure how you managed to get so close to this goose. Long lens?

It was quite clever of you to capture this rare shot and wise of the bird to hideout where it would be safe. :)

Smart bird for sure!

Great capture! And, actually Can Geese and even mallards will still nest in trees and on building tops :-)

I work at one of the nation's busiest wildlife hospitals and we get DOZENS of calls every spring about geese and mallards nesting in trees and rooftops. People are used to seeing Wood Ducks and Hooded Mergansers do this, but not other waterfowl.

The babies bounce amazingly well...

I'd keep watching - that just may turn into a nest! (keep us updated) :-)

What a funny picture. Canadian geese are often goofy, er, goosey, but this takes the cake. I'd guess you're right, though - it's safer up there. More or less.

Whether she/he is silly or clever it's a great resting place. Great capture!

ha, ha. That would make a good nest except for the small problem of getting the babies out ot it!

I would've assumed the same as you! I've never seen a goose resting place quite like this, nice eye and captures!

Things aren't always what they seem, I guess. I would have thought the same as you. Don't think I've ever seen a goose that high up in a tree. Nice shots.

Doesn't matter, it is a good shot of the goose in the dead tree.

That is a wonderful and funny photo! Imagine seeing a goose in a tree! I'm glad it wasn't the actual nest.

I likely would have thought the same thing... But wood ducks nest in trees, and the babies just fall out...

Love the picture of the goose in the tree. Found a safe place to rest.

You never know, it could go back and lay eggs there! (My boss had a cat that had her kittens up in a tree....farther up than this, too!)
