Red-breasted Nuthatch (Sitta canadensis)
It's no secret that I love both the white-breasted and red-breasted nuthatches, both of which are frequent visitors to our peanut feeder. But when I see them some place else I get doubly excited. I saw this red-breasted nuthatch in a Whitby, Ontario, bird sanctuary...and apparently this variety is not often seen there. Hmmm. What's common in one area may be quite unusual somewhere else...and not that far away, either.
Wondering: Is that CameraGirl again???
This red-breasted nuthatch is often at our feeder and so friendly that I can almost reach out and touch it. Clearly it believes it ought not nip the hand that feeds it!
At our peanut feeder
This nuthatch stays here all year long so I'm sure I'll be featuring it again during the winter months.

An Absolute beauty! I don't see them here very often.
I don't see the nuthatch around here. Great shots!
I haven't seen this species at all, except in field guides.
HI Fantastic bird and great photographs. I have just arrived back after a 6 weeks holiday in Africa and have LOTS of photographs to edit and share (eventually)
Such a pretty bird too!
Your photos are so sharp and detailed. I wonder where the name nuthatch comes from.
Darla
just adorable with a cute little attitude!
awesome shots of these cuties... and YES, i think that was CameraGirl
You caught these nuthatches so perfectly! I miss N American birds. The ones here are so boring. ;)
So sweet EG, you're lucky they feel comfortable with you.. my big birds do but the littlies are so sqittish. You're nuthatches are a delight.
What a cutie, EG!! Such perfect captures! They're the next best thing to seeing them "in person"! Wonderful post as always and such a great start for my day!! Thank you for sharing!!
Beautiful little birdie!
Oh great takes. So sweet they are.
These are really great photos. Did you get a new camera?
Fabulous shots!
It's part of the family!
Pretty little birds!!! My father once said that butternut trees were common in the county south of ours, but not to be found in Oxford... Same thing as the nuthatches!
Lovely little bird! I'm glad it is so comfortable with you around. great shots!
Your birds pictures are always fabulous !
And thank you or your nice comment !
They are just adorable!! So they eat peanuts?? I love the way they walk down trees head first! I need to put some peanuts out!
Great pictures of this little guy. I am so happy that I have both species of Nuthatch on my yard all year.
Cute bird.
I'm not sure which nuthatch is cooler. I had a laugh today when I saw your RBNU and my PYNU show up next to each other on the other site. They are pretty amazing birds.
I think he did recognize you (or maybe he'd heard from his cousins who frequent your peanut feeder) .. At any rate, he sure posed beautifully for you. They are wonderful birds -- wherever you see them.
What a little cutie he is!!!
What a handsome bird! I have never seen one either.
Nuthatches are my favourite winter bird. I love their little cheeps and their debonaire outfits. We have mostly white-breasted ones in Eastern Ontario, but I do get the occasional red-breasted one.
You made my heart fly!

Really great to have birds that are tame around one, try if he will take food from your hand. It is like the sun came out on a grey day when a little bird trust you to that extent.
Beautiful photos of both.
Awesome pictures!
You get really nice, clear photos of these birds, with every feather showing. You have figured out the art of taking bird pix.
Great shots! I love these little guys! Won't be long until they show up in my yard!
I'm not quite sure that we have that one over here, but if we had, you should have the honour of "shooting" it - marvellous bird's shots.
Wow! It modeled for you well.
Happy WW!
To have this beauty so close by like that would be a dream come true.
OMG, EG; I was trying hard to catching up commenting with friends blogs lining up on tub. So sorry I mixed up your blog with other friends... Whew, I shouldn't do the same way. Relieved to come back :-)

What a cute little fellow. You are lucky to have them visit. I don't believe we have them here. I just get house sparrows most of the time.
