Ferry on Lake Simcoe
This is the ferry that runs from Virginia Beach (Ontario) to Georgina Island, the largest island in Lake Simcoe and a Chippewa First Nation reserve.
Keeping the channel clear of ice
Some years the ferry stops running during the winter months, but this year the ice wasn't very thick until a couple of days ago when the temperature dipped to -30°C. Until the ferry is running again, island residents can cross the lake in an air taxi.

Beautiful photos, you've captured the essence of winter.
Excellent photos Camera Girl!
Interesting winter photos.
That's a pretty impressive job that those ice removers are doing.
Love this post EG.. It's a scorcher here today so a very welcome sight, always enjoy your wordage :)
Great views. How far away is the island?
Hello, what an amazing mountain of ice. I am sure the ferry is appreciated by the island residents. Great series! Happy Tuesday, enjoy your day!
Floridian feeling really cold right now
Those are pretty big chunks of ice! I would be afraid the digger would slip down the ice mountain!
Cool. I didn't know about this island/reserve.
that mountain of snow thing looks dangerous to me, as in that digger machine rolling down the side of it.. brrrr the lowest temp i have ever been in is 16 above, never anything negative..
I know my vessels, but this is a really special ferry!
Hi Darla,
It's 6.6 kilometres from Virginia Beach to the docks on the island and takes approximately 35 minutes.
Should be a difficult work cleaning the harbor for ferry connecting the island. Excellent capture on the progress
Fearsome snow!
Great set of photos
Looks like the ferryboat copes well with the ice. Interesting, if chilly looking, post.
Great shots of your ice cold ferry.
That would be a cold ride!
that looks might cold... i am glad we haven't had that much ice/snow overhere for years now and i hope that will stay that way too, i do not love the winter at all
Have a nice abc-day / - week

Nice series of photos Tina. I enjoy ferry rides but only in the summer when it's a nice day. :)
That's a lot of chunky ice. It sure looks cold.
What fun photos... I never knew they pulled chunks of ice out of the water with big machines like that. I thought they just used those for dirt lol
All these ice! Impressive!
Fab fotos, but I sure wouldn't want to live with that kind of weather. We lived in Ottawa for a few years and we were relieved to return to the rainy we(s)t coast!

That's a lot of work. We got the deep cold, and now we're getting more snow.
I imagine that's a pretty challenging port to keep clear.
-30C is never much fun. Nice snaps of the cold weather.
What a lot of ice and snow! A few flakes can paralyze my small town! lol
Great photos! Glad they keep travel available back and forth. Now I'm singing Doe a Deer a female deer...
WOW! That's a lot of thick ice and snow to remove from the channel! I think I would stay in until it thawed...I don't "do" boats...kayaks, yes...boats...NOPE!...:)JP
I don't mind that I don't have that to deal with...but would still love to live near...
Superb captures as always, EG!! That is a LOT of ice/snow!! Hope you're staying warm!!
Never seen something like this before. Great frames all!
Happy ABCW!
That is a lot of ice.
That looks soooo very cold!!!
The ferry doesn't take many vehicles. Must have to take frequent trips.
Great photos - they made me shiver!
cold sailing
Ice and snow has a beauty all its own.
PS: I at least believe fa is really a word. ;-)
I would love this!
Wonderful post and photography ~ amazing the work it takes to clear ice ~
Happy Week to you ~ ^_^
All Sound Of Music references are welcome.

Very interesting and great photos! It all looks like winter. I guess I really am a warm climate person, because that looks too darn cold.
