Shelburne Murals/ Our World

 Threshing Bee 1910

These murals in a farming community north of Toronto depict three important  get-togethers during the first half of the 20th century.

Unfortunately, the murals are beginning to show their age - not just because they show times gone by, but also because they are fading and  coming apart.

Farm Implement Day 1908

Area farmers used to meet in early spring to pick up farm equipment they'd ordered during the winter.

Wonderful murals! It is wonderful when the old ones are maintained.

Idyllic as these scenes look, I see a lot of hard work in the events that these murals depict. Getting around in the snow isn’t easy even in modern times and the middle mural has me wondering how horses withstand the cold while pulling heavy wagons and sleds. Also like how the boy on the bicycle is leading the band. Hope these precious historic moments never fade from memory.

I hope that someone is engaged soon to help restore the murals before they are totally marred and beyond repair. It's a wonderfully visual way to record history!

I'm curious as to how large these murals are and if there is some effort to possibly restore and maintain them.

Have the murals been refurbished? It looks like the last one has "M BAKER 1998" in the lower right-hand corner.

Great murals. I wonder how hard it is to restore murals -- hadn't thought about it before, but they certainly are subject to the effects of weather .

Even though they are faded, they are still beautiful and they capture important events from the past. Thanks for sharing these with us.

I adore these murals. They remind me of some of the folk art we see now. The last one is my favorite because of the band marching on Armistice Day. I hope there will be monies to restore them because they are depict such an important part of life at that time hi history. genie

I just LOVE murals! These are great. I especially like that last one with the band. It is an unusual subject for a mural.
