November 9/ Nature Notes

In the wild, central Ontario this week

Most flowers are gone now and seeds are maturing and finding ways to spread. In the largest square, you can see that the prickly cucumber (Echinocystis lobata) has dried and opened and released its seeds.

Moving clockwise: Most of the seeds of Virgin's bower (Clematis virginiana) have now dispersed, but the seed inside the red osier dogwood (Cornus stolonifera) is still on the plant as is its bright red leaf.  The red berries of the highbush cranberry (Viburnum trilobum) still contain their seeds and are likely to remain on the bush until spring when birds are hungry enough to eat them - they don't appear to be as appealing this time of year.  Goldenrod (Solidago ssp.) are still hanging onto their seeds.

Please visit Michelle at Rambling Woods for more NATURE NOTES.

The prickly cucumber appeals to me. Now tell us, please, how you know all these scientific labels and characteristics. I'm totally impressed.

Another gorgeous collage! And again, I'm impressed with your extensive knowledge of Ontario flora.

That prickly cucumber looks very dangerous. Is it edible? Can't imagine why anyone would eat it! :-)

Autumn is always a time for great colours and you have a gorgeous selection. The prickly cucumber looks very cool.
My unknown flower is indeed a coreopsis, by the way, thanks for the help.

Your colors have faded from the brights of the summer - reds and browns now reign. Wonderful collection.
