Abandoned Barn 2

Easterly end of abandoned barn in colour

This is the other end of the log barn I posted on Monday HERE   It was a very bright day when I took this photo and - looking in this direction - the weathered wood looks a bit "washed out." We were just traveling through so I didn't want to wait for less harsh light. When I darkened it a bit, the wood took on a bluish cast, which wasn't at all what I had seen with my naked eye...

Easterly end of abandoned barn in black and white

so I decided to see what this end of the barn looked like in B&W.

And this is what the other end of the barn looked like in B&W. The colour version is HERE .

Two Green Barns

Green barn somewhere near Lindsay, Ontario

I'm still on a quest for green barns. BUT believe it or not, these two were already in my photo files. The first was taken in November before snow fell. Some of the grass near the barn is green. Don't you just love the foundation made of rocks?  There's so much just-cut cow corn in the fields that I'm sure this is a barn for cattle.

Somewhere near Barrie, Ontario

The second photo was made in December.  The barn looks a lot newer than the one above. It's located near Barrie, probably Innisfil. It's in good condition but has a big green dumpster out front. Hm. At the left of the barn are bales of hay, probably for cows or horses.

Three Red Barns

 Local barn

I've been looking through my "archives" lately and have discovered some red barns.  The first one ALWAYS has a lot of "stuff" out front but the day I made this photo it was relatively clear.

 Surrounded by evergreens

The second had been repurposed as an antiques store, but by the time I made this photo is was back to being a simple old red barn.

A newer barn

The third one is more modern and has - in spring and summer - a beautiful vineyard and garden out front...but it's difficult to see the barn. Now you can see the barn but the garden looks a bit scraggly.

Abandoned barn

 Log barn

In our travels around central Ontario,  my husband and I have discovered many treasures that may soon disappear. One of those is this old log barn, now abandoned.

 Long shot of barn

Although the barn is not in use, the land around it it still is. I walked up a bumpy dirt road to take these photos but clearly the road had recently been used by farm vehicles.

 Open door

I was curious. Would you be?  Yes, it was naughty but I confess I did venture through that open door.

 From inside

It was dark but not as much as I had predicted as...

Through the roof

lots of light was coming from above.

Decaying Log Barn

Old barn door

Seen from the road - a dead end dirt road - this barn is on a cattle ranch that's still being used, although the barn is not...at least, I think it's not being used.

View of the entire log barn

The metal roof is still good but some of the logs are decaying badly.

Unpainted Barn

Old barn doors with grapevine starting to take over

Even the boards used to repair these old doors are weathered now.  (These photos were taken in late October.)

 Weather-beaten silo

I was feeling bold and walked a little way up the farmer's driveway to take the first two photos.

Barn as seen from the road

As you can see, the barn is quite close to the road.

Sad Ontario Barn

 Barn outside Beeton, Ontario

Another sad barn, I'm afraid, on its way to being reclaimed by nature.

Old Barn and Silo

Unpainted barn and old silo

The barn is not what attracted my eye. The silo did.  The roof on the silo is not a common style in my area, although it may have been at one time as there are many old silos around without roofs.

Closer look at the silo

If anyone knows more about this type of silo, I'd love to know more.

Worn Red Barn

 Old red barn

I'm not sure if this barn is being used or not.  I saw no animals, but th house on the right (not in the photo) looks lived in.

 Longer view

I'm impressed that the silo looks to be in good shape. But there is an old foundation in the foreground and I have no idea what that was for. The fence is slowly deteriorating.

As seen from the front - the sun went behind a big dark cloud!

It must have been a handsome farm at one time.

Old But Cared For

 Unpainted barn under moody sky

I really like the look of weathered wood on a barn, especially when the barn is well-cared for.

Barn basement/ Sepia Scenes

Basement of old barn in Sutton, Ontario

This is a closeup of a barn that houses cattle. Although some windows are broken and the roof needs repair, the rest of the farm looks fairly prosperous. I'm guessing the farmer just hasn't yet gotten around to fixing the barn.

Rusty Roofed Barn

 Old Barn

This barn, although it has seen better days, is still being used for housing cattle. I watched the cattle head for a distant back field but was too slow to  capture them in the photo!

A little close view

As you can see, this building has lots of "air-conditioning" vents for this hot day but it must be rather chilly in winter.

Old "Red" Barn/ Monochrome Maniacs

You'll have to imagine you can see how red this barn is as the building turned out to be a good subject for Monochrome Maniacs, hosted by Aileni of Loose Ends. A few boards are missing but the barn is still in use.

Dairy Farm

Old barn with new boards on it's easterly side

It makes me feel good to see new boards on an old barn.  The northerly end could use some repairs too, but this farm is kept up so I'm pretty sure it will happen soon.

Barn Cat/ Camera Critters

Princess of the woodpile

This sweet kitty lives in a barn with her siblings and helps keep the mouse population down there, which is very important on a farm. But she is wary of strangers, especially of ones with cameras. She may not look like it, but she really is very affectionate with the people who take good care of her, even though she lives in the barn with the rest of the farm animals.

Barn Swallows

Barn Swallow atop dead tree (Hirundo rustica)

Although Barn Swallows are the most abundant swallow worldwide they have been designated Threatened in Ontario.  Their numbers declined by 30% between 1999 and 2009.

 On wire fence

Scientists are studying the reasons looking at breeding grounds, wintering grounds and migration routes and focussing in on
- loss of flying insects which makes up the bulk of their diet
- changes in modern agriculture that have created loss of breeding habitat
- Competition from other birds such as house sparrows for nesting places
- insect pests such as blowflies and mites

Red Barn Uxbridge

A fixer-upper

Uxbridge still has many working farms but this is NOT one of them. I think the barn is still lovely though, and the drying grasses and weeds add to its charm.

Long Past It's Best-Before Date

Here's a local barn that has seen much better days, that's for sure.
I'm surprised no one has has offered to take the barn down to salvage the old barn boards.

Three Old Barns

 Barn and silo

Many of the barns close to where I live will soon be gone. Farms here are fast becoming subdivisions and strip malls.

 Barn with stone foundation

An extension of a major north-south road that starts in Toronto has recently opened, cutting East Gwillimbury in two and making it easier and quicker to drive from this rural area to Toronto - the fourth largest city in North America after Mexico City, New York and Los Angeles.

Wanna Peek?

I can see only three sides of this long, low, rectangular-shaped barn from the road, but it appears to have only ONE window. And this is it. On the south end.

Aren't you just a tiny bit curious about what's inside? I am.

The barn is quite close to the road - the long, westerly side parallel to passing cars. I'm curious. How can I not wonder what the barn contains when I can see this window every time I pass by on my way north?

I can't see in because the window is too far up. Besides, it would be trespassing.

What do YOU think might be inside?
