American Kestrel/Wild Birds

Male American kestrel (Falco sparverius)

Perching on a utility wire, this colourful and fierce American kestrel is North America's smallest falcon

Slate-blue head and wings, rusty-red back

Kestrels hunt in open areas with few trees and short vegetation.

So beautiful; I love hawks of all kinds but these are definitely among my favourites...second only to redtail hawks.

Nice catch! These are beautiful and colorful little hawks. I got a picture of one in my yard a few days ago. Not as good as yours though.

I cannot come close to getting a shot this good....they fly so quickly.

These are great shots. Around here the Kestrals spook so easily and take off even when a car slows down.

Amazing. Love that fluffed look. Excellent shots.

Fierce is a good adjective for this beauty -- make up for his smaller size (as hawks go) don't they!

Kestrels are VERY difficult to get close enough to shoot. These are awesome. What lens did you use? I will not be able to post mine after seeing these. Great job!

Rune Eide said...

Nice ones, with the added effect of the detailed wires. I enjoyed the claws gripping!

Stewart M said...

What a great little bird. I love the way the wire is such a different feel and texture to the bird - its a great image.

Cheers and thanks for linking to WBW.

I think he looks cute all puffed up to keep warm ... but I know better. This little Falcon can move so quickly and hunt with a ferosity that would take your breath away, as I know you know. Beautiful pictures of a wonderful bird.
