Irrigation system in front of barn in front of sunset
Last Thursday - a magical winter sunset
Random 5 Friday
1. Time is fleeting.
Don't hold back.
Appreciate this precious life.
~ Ezra Bayda
2. Every fall I look forward to January and February because I know it's then that I can find time to go through my book stash and read, read, read.
3. Recently I've been catching up with a few books I ought to have read years ago: two books about the settling of Canada's Prairies by Pierre Berton and three books by French Canadian author Gabrielle Roy.
4. I've been updating my garden club's handbook, 50 pages. It's done annually in January and think this is the eighth time I've done it. When a change is made on one of the first few pages, the words can shift significantly on the following pages. Quite a few pages or sections of pages are "locked down" so that missing words can escape to places unknown. I'm in the process of changing the cover, which is page 1. I should have done that first, right?
5. Earlier this month, my husband and I drove to Algonquin Provincial Park to enjoy the fresh air, to see wildlife and, of course, to bird. One bird I had hoped to see was a ruffed grouse, which my husband saw by the side of the road but I did not. I was a bit annoyed with myself for being so slow. A couple of days later, we were driving down an East Gwillimbury country road when two ruffed grouse walked out in front of us. I saw those. And right here in my own town!

Who would have thought that an irrigation system could look so poetic? :-)
Beautiful. I like the way you incorporated the irrigation system. Great eye!
Nice photo of mundane equipment. It doesn't look as though they'll be using it for a while.
It takes an artist's eye and sensibility to elevate the mundane to the sublime.
Beautiful view. Sounds like you've been keeping busy.
Beautiful and just a remarkable sunset!
A lovely shot.
Grouse are such a fun bird to watch as they go about too.
you are too quick this week. now i wish it was Friday. it's Thursday. at least i think it is??! have a good weekend. ( :
We have the irrigation systems in Ocala but not that white stuff. Love the way you composed this!
I'm glad that after grousing so much you finally got to see 2 ruffled grouses right in front of you!
Crazy photographer? Oui!
I like the way the sunlight moves up into the clouds. The irrigator looks like a giant insect. The red knobs on the steam train are fabulous -so much punch to the photo.
Lovely orange light!
that photo looks like a visitor from outer space plunked down in the snow righ t in front of the sun.. beautiful. and yes, should have done the cover first. isn't it amazing what hindsight is? woo hoo on the ruffled grouse
Wonderful. Simple subject matter always has the finest beauty.
beautiful. glad you got to see the grouse!
Beautiful! I like the way you captured it right behind the irrigation equipment.
A gorgeous sunset!
I love the colours in the sunset sky in your photo. The machinery really stands out in front of it.
What a beautiful scene of a modern farm. We see a lot of pivot wheel lines in our part of the world, too.
Wov! Lovely colours- tukis, red and blue.
The first time I saw these irrigation systems was in the snow in the Pacific Northwest. ;-) I couldn't believe how big and long they were. I didn't, however, catch them with a beautiful setting sun.
And I blush because I have never read Gabrielle Roy...
Isn't that just the way it is? Nature has a fine sense of humour!!!!
(ツ) from Cottage Country Ontario , East !
I'm glad to hear this is a sunset, otherwise I would have thought it was an alien craft phoning home.
In any case, it's a beautifully composed photo !
I love the composition and the colors. I still have not seen a Ruffed Grouse and have little hope of ever seeing one now that I'm settled in Florida.
What a spectacular sunset, the cold wintry blues against the warm orange, magical!
You have kept yourself quite busy. So much already accomplished and you still have the whole of February ahead of you. Congratulations and keep up the good work!
All the best,
What a gorgeous contrast between the machinery and the sunset! Fantastic shot!
You have an absolutely fantastic blog. You are amazing blogger.
I ♥ your blog!
Feel free to my blog dear:
Somehow it looked like a plane to me, EG! ;-)
That bright orange with the strip of blue in the center is awesome!
A gorgeous sky and scene! Lovely photo. Congrats on the Grouse sighting!
You have such a wonderful eye, EG!!!
And, you must be the kind of person everyone turns to when there is something that needs to be done.
What have you got to read by Berton? Just wondering. I have been working on my Random 5 and was just telling what I am about to finish and what I am getting ready to read...do you ever re-read books? I think with all I have and all that is available, and I still re-read certain books every few years.
Anyway, love the sunset.
Gorgeous shot- and oh boy do I know what you mean about the words shifting. I do a genealogy society journal and I get myself in to a near tizzy every spring trying to get the layout to stick!
You turned that irrigation system into a work of art. A beautifully composed photo and I enjoyed the read also. It also must have been wonderful to see those grouse! Have a great weekend :)
Its volunteers like you that keep things like your garden club going. Good for you.
What a gorgeous sunset! Now, I need to get to work on my own Random 5!
Love that first qoute and the colors in that photo are amazing.
Nice sunset photo!
Great capture and it is so perfect for alphabet 'X'.
great sky scene
Thanks for sharing this beautiful sunset sky. The colors are glorious.
oh that sunset shot is just wonderful! :)
That's a gorgeous sunset.
Beautiful sunset and you got your grouse!
A fantastic winter photo!
dropping by from ARJ and R5F today. That's a lovely photo at the top of the post.
We are trying to encourage our oldest Monkey to get interested in birding. She has the Stokes NA field guide.
That's a stunning sky EG! I love Algonquin at any time of year!
That's a magnificent sunset! A beautiful capture. Glad you got to see your grouse!
That sunset has glorious color, but it still look awfully cold!! Great random thoughts for the week. Hope you and yours have a warm and safe weekend.
Visiting from R5F
It sounds like your winter is very productive. I'm impressed. Love that shot. Even though it's been miserable cold, there have been a lot of beautiful skies this winter.
I love to read, too, and I am crazy about sunsets, especially when water is nearby.
Beautiful sunset. I like the edition of the farm equipment.
Reading is a lot of fun. I have a list of books others have mentioned that I plan to check on soon.
Funny how sometimes we miss things like that Grouse and then they pop up where you least expect them too.
True it is great to have time to read, but I would like a little outside time as well.
You definitely have an artistic eye, beautiful shot! Glad you finally got to see the bird you were looking for.
Have a great weekend!
Funny about the grouse -- glad you got to see them!
What a beautiful shot!
Beautiful sunset! Unusual subject matter, but it works! It's interesting to read about your birding. I've thought someday I might get into that. Sounds like you live in a great area for it.
such an exquisitely ribboned sky!
Stunning image! I love to read in the winter, too!
What a beautiful photo! That sun is just glorious!
The wild turkeys are out here in Michigan. Three females were in someone's front yard but they got spooked when my husband stopped the car so I could take their picture.
I also enjoyed your earlier post K is for knob.
