Painted Lady/ Camera Critters

We've had cold nights and frost here, but this painted lady (Vanessa carduii) hasn't given up yet. I guess as long as the butterfly bushes close to the house still bloom, it'll carry on.

The inside of this butterfly's wings are very colourful. I spent quite a bit of time in summer trying to catch a painted lady with its wings open, but it would not cooperate. However, this one gave me ample opportunity to capture its beautiful colours. ;-)

But here you can see the outer wings are quite drab except for a touch of orange on the upper wing.

We've been seeing a lot of these Painted ladies on our butterfly bushes, which are still blooming. Beautiful shot!

She's a beauty! Wonderful colurs on the wings on the inside but the outside is so dull... almost like Mother Nature ran out of paint!

Well, I am feeling a bit embarrassed now...back a month or two ago I thought I had actually captured a red admiral with its wings closed...I had for sure been chasing one. I posted it and called it a red admiral.. But looking at the one photo of yours I am almost positive it was a painted lady. Boy, do I feel dumb!

Impressive! Only "rain"- birds around here now :-(

I am somewhat like that too. Although the butterflies give me more than adequate wing opening and closing sequences, I am always hoping to capture one flat out open and seldom do. We do not have any butterflies here except cabbage whites and not many of them. Most all flowers are gone except one or two and those are not crowded. I guess the season of beauty is over.
